Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State has made startling accusations against certain government officials and security personnel, alleging their involvement in perpetuating banditry, which he claims has evolved into a lucrative “business venture.”

In an appearance on Channels Television, Governor Radda expressed deep concern over the proliferation of banditry in Nigeria’s northern region, attributing its persistence to complicity among various stakeholders.

He asserted, “Now it has turned out to be a business venture. A business venture for the criminals, some people who are in government, some people who are in security outfits, and some people who are responsible for the day-to-day activities of their people.”

Despite widespread beliefs attributing insecurity to political motives, Governor Radda emphasized poverty and injustice as significant drivers of banditry, debunking claims of political influence in the crisis.

He noted the dire economic circumstances faced by many youths in the north, citing instances where individuals are recruited into banditry with minimal incentives.

In response to mounting insecurity challenges, Governor Radda disclosed that a delegation of northern governors recently participated in a symposium organized by the United States Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C.

While the meeting sparked criticism for its location, the governor clarified that the governors were invited by the institute to discuss strategies for addressing regional insecurity.

“The meeting was not at the instance of the selected governors of northern states, but at the instance of the United States Institute of Peace. They were the people who invited us; they hosted us for the meeting,” Governor Radda emphasized.

Reflecting on the symposium, Governor Radda stressed its significance in providing fresh insights into the complexities of insecurity in the region.

He highlighted the collaborative efforts among governors and stakeholders to devise sustainable solutions, emphasizing the importance of cross-fertilizing ideas and engaging with global security experts.

The engagement in Washington, D.C., brought together ten governors from affected regions, fostering meaningful dialogue and strategic planning to address the pressing security concerns plaguing Nigeria’s northern states.
