A tragic bandit attack on Unguwar Sarkin Noma Community in Sabuwa Local Government Area of Katsina State has resulted in the loss of at least twenty-four lives, with several others sustaining injuries.

According to reports, the victims, predominantly vigilante members, bravely confronted the assailants, resulting in fatal consequences.

The attack, which occurred Thursday night and lasted approximately an hour, saw hoodlums raiding four villages—Unguwar Sarkin Noma, Gangara, Tafi, and Kore—in what appeared to be reprisals over recent military offensives against bandit hideouts.

The assailants, armed and shooting sporadically, instilled fear and chaos among residents.

Chairman of Sabuwa Local Government Council, Faruq Dalhatu confirmed that 23 victims were laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites on Friday morning, while the final casualty was conveyed for burial after succumbing to injuries.

Despite swift responses from security agencies following distress calls, the attackers perpetrated their heinous acts, leaving the community in mourning.

Police authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident, with attempts to reach the State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Abubakar Sadiq, proving unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State condemned the escalating banditry, characterizing it as a “business venture” facilitated by complicit individuals within government and security circles.

Speaking on Channels Television Governor Radda highlighted the multifaceted challenges hindering efforts to eradicate banditry, emphasizing the need for concerted action to address the root causes.

The surge in banditry underscores the persistent security threats faced by communities, particularly in vulnerable areas like Sabuwa Local Government, where criminal activities continue to escalate.

As criminal gangs exploit local vulnerabilities, there is an urgent call for comprehensive security measures and proactive interventions to safeguard lives and restore peace to affected regions.
