NPA welcomes ‘Kota Cempaka’ Vessel with 566 containers at Onne Port Complex

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Onne Port Complex, has announced the arrival of a large size vessel, the ‘Kota Cempaka’, carrying 566 containers.

The management of NPA revealed this development in a statement issued on Saturday, highlighting the vessel’s impressive size, with an overall length of 300 meters and sailing under the flag of Singapore.

According to the statement, the successful berthing of the Kota Cempaka underlines the agency’s capacity and preparedness to accommodate large ship calls.

The Managing Director of NPA, Mohammed Bello-Koko emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating, “This is a confirmation of the capacity and readiness of eastern ports for vessel traffic.”

Bello-Koko further noted that the investments made in channel navigability and security are yielding positive results, reinforcing the agency’s commitment to advocating for increased patronage of eastern ports.

The Onne Port Complex, situated on the Bonny River Estuary along Ogu Creek in Rivers State, operates under the landlord port model, designed to promote private sector involvement in the port industry. This model has contributed to the complex’s efficiency and growth.

This recent milestone follows a previous achievement in August 2020 when the NPA announced the berthing of the largest container vessel ever to dock at a Nigerian port.

The Maerskline Stardelhorn vessel, with a length overall of 300 meters and a width of 48 meters, was received at the Federal Ocean Terminal, Onne, Rivers State, further demonstrating the port’s capability to handle large-scale maritime operations.
