Islamic State claims killing of Nigerian army general in a battle

Islamic State claimed responsibility for an attack on Saturday in northeast Nigeria, the militant group said on its Telegram account.

A Nigerian army general and three soldiers were killed in the attack, the army and sources said.

Libyan mercenaries were believed to have joined forces with insurgents of the ISWAP in the Northeast at the weekend, killing Brigadier General Dzarma Zirkusu and three other soldiers in Borno in an attack on the military.

Chairman Senate Committee on Army, Ndume, who spoke on the deadly attack in Abuja, expressed his condolences and described the incident as painful.

He lamented that residents are fleeing Askira as ISWAP terrorists are believed to be regrouping in Lake Chad region.

Late General Zirkusu, was the commander, 28 Task Force in Chibok.
