Worries over Trump calls for US election delay, may issue executive order
As the United States President Donald Trump pushes for the November 3, election to be delayed, an American Twitter user has drawn attention to the possible ways Trump could realise his dream without going through the usual legal process.
President Trump has in a tweet on Thursday suggested that the 2020 presidential election be delayed until people “can properly, securely and safely vote.”
His suggestion has generated a huge debate on social media and controversy across the American political and economic circle, but @Newsviews100, with over 51 thousand followers warned that people should stop ignoring Trump tweet because he can truly have his way.
“I see many people saying that Trump “can’t” suspend the election without congressional approval/amendment to the constitution.
“But what if Trump ignores the rules, issues an executive order, and directs federal workers to follow his orders, including the military.
“At that point, Trump, with the assistance of fellow traitors like Barr, and others, plus his team of lawyers, could act first and then tie up objections by congress just long enough to actually suspend the election. We all know how fast the courts and congress take to act,” News View wrote on its twitter handle in response to the Trump tweet.
“So, I’ve explained exactly how Trump could do this. Going over his tweet history, one can see a large percentage of his “distractions” have been way more than distractions.
“Ultimately, we’re going to find out soon enough whether “we the people” are okay with total autocratic, dictatorial rule. It’s not at our doorstep anymore, it’s inside our house,” the tweet noted.
President who is currently lagging badly in the polls, has cited the impact of coronavirus and what he said would be “fraudulent” voting.
Trump wrote: “With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA.”
“Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???” Trump wrote in the tweet.
Though only Congress can change the election date, which is set by law on November 3. With Democrats ruling the lower House, that seems highly unlikely to happen.
Trump has previously insisted that he sees no problem going ahead with the election, where he faces Democratic challenger Joe Biden.
The coronavirus pandemic remains out of control in swaths of the United States, including most recently in Republican-led states like Florida and Texas.
During the presidential primary contests earlier this year, several states delayed voting or opened fewer polling sites.
However, a number of people are worried that Trump could go for the broke if he considers his chances in the election very slim and damns the consequence with the Americans being the ultimate loser.
The US economy is down and from a report of the performance of the economy in the second quarter, the GDP has shrunk by as 33 percent in the three months to June,
The economy, which has been Trump’s major achievement he loves to showcase has been battered since the outbreak of the pandemic with the latest weekly jobless claims rise to 1.42 million.
A canceled or delay balloting could distort the process and raise a number of legal issues, however, the law could on the side of the president, since the pandemic could be termed an emergency or a war like situation, which he could hide under to issue an executive order and call in the national guard and the military to curtail any major protest by the opposition.
