Why Police decline Kano Governor’s order to evict deposed Emir pending court hearing

The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Usaini Gumel, has clarified why the State Police Command did not comply with Governor Abba Yusuf’s directive to evict the deposed Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, from the Nasarawa mini palace.

On Thursday, Governor Yusuf ordered the eviction following a judgment by Justice Liman of the Federal High Court in Kano.

However, during a press briefing on Friday, Commissioner Gumel explained that enforcing the governor’s directive would be premature due to ongoing legal proceedings.

“The police will not evict Ado Bayero because the same government has filed a case at the state high court on the eviction order, which will be heard on Monday, June 24,” Gumel stated.

“Executing the governor’s order now would be like jumping the gun; it would seem as if we are preempting the court’s decision, which we must avoid.”

Commissioner Gumel emphasized the importance of allowing the judicial process to unfold without interference from law enforcement.

He noted that enforcing the eviction before the court’s hearing could undermine the legal proceedings and potentially lead to further complications.

In the meantime, security around the Nasarawa mini palace has been significantly tightened. Security operatives have cordoned off the four major routes leading to the palace to maintain order and prevent any potential disturbances.

This development underscores the delicate balance between executive directives and judicial processes, highlighting the police’s role in maintaining neutrality and upholding the rule of law.

The case at the Kano State High Court, set to be heard on Monday, June 24, will determine the next steps regarding the eviction order and the status of the deposed Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero.
