Venezuela intensifies crackdown by canceling passports of journalists, activists

Venezuela has revoked the passports of dozens of journalists and human rights activists following President Nicolas Maduro’s disputed re-election victory, according to a report by the Financial Times.

Rights groups warn that this move is part of a growing campaign to silence opposition to the authoritarian leader.

Citing Caracas-based advocacy group Laboratorio de Paz, the FT reported that at least 40 individuals, primarily journalists and activists, had their passports annulled without explanation.

The true number is likely higher, as many Venezuelans fear reporting the cancellations.

Authorities have reportedly confiscated passports from individuals attempting to board flights at the country’s main airport.

Rafael Uzcátegui, co-director of Laboratorio de Paz, explained that unlike more violent forms of repression, such as murder or torture, cancelling passports has proven to be an efficient method for the government to stifle dissent with a minimal political cost.

The clampdown comes after Maduro’s controversial re-election in July, a result heavily contested by the opposition and deemed illegitimate by many international observers.

Rights groups warn that the Maduro administration’s passport cancellation strategy further isolates critical voices, deepening the country’s democratic crisis.
