The presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu on Wednesday officially unveiled Kashim Shettima as his running mate in the 2023 presidential election.

The event, which took place at Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, attracted a large party faithful and some well-wishers of the candidates.

Adding colour to the event was the presence of some pastors and Bishops from different Christian denominations who showed up at the venue.

The presence of the clerics seemed to cause a stir as onlookers and guests stared hard at them as they walked into the reception of the Musa Yar’Adua Centre dressed in their cassocks and habits, amid heavy security at the venue.

Many Christian organisations and personalities have condemned the selection of a Muslim-Muslim candidate to fly the flag of the ruling APC at the next presidential election.

However, defending his decision, Tinubu said what mattered most was “competence in governance.”

“To forge ahead as a nation toward development and prosperity, we must break free of old binds. We must recalibrate our political calculations to where competence and fairness matter more than reductive demographics,” he had said.

Tinubu had named Shettima,  a serving senator and former two-term governor of Borno state as his running mate on July 10.

Shettima was announced as the party’s vice-presidential candidate after Ibrahim Masari stepped down as the “placeholder” running mate of Tinubu.
