The contest is between Yari, a former governor of Zamfara State, and Akpabio, a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and ex-governor of Akwa Ibom State.

Akpabio and Yari are top-ranking chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
President Bola Tinubu had gone all the way to pull support for the anointed candidate of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), which was also influenced by the president.

All the governors of the ruling party are in support and are mobilizing elected members from their states to support Akpabio.
