The Nigerian Senate confirmed the nomination of service chiefs and heads of security agencies appointed by President Bola Tinubu on Thursday.

This confirmation came after an extensive screening process conducted by the upper chamber.

During a closed-door session, President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio stated that the service chiefs responded to inquiries on defense-related matters and other relevant issues.

The upper legislative chamber concluded the confirmation process in a closed session that lasted over an hour.

President Tinubu’s request for confirmation of the service chiefs was conveyed in a letter read on the Senate floor earlier this week.

Upon the resumption of plenary on Thursday, the Senate commenced the screening process for the service chiefs. Each nominee was given the opportunity to address the chamber and outline their strategies for addressing the prevailing security challenges in the country, provided they were confirmed.

The confirmed service chiefs include C.G Musa, a Major General as the Chief of Defence Staff, T.A Lagbaja, a Major General as the Chief of Army Staff, E.A Ogalla a Rear Admiral as the Chief of Naval Staff, H.B Abubakar, a Air Vice-Marshal as the Chief of Air Staff, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and EPA Undiandeye, a Major General as the Chief of Defence Intelligence.

Last week, President Tinubu invoked section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act, CAP A20 laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, in a letter to the National Assembly requesting the confirmation of the service chiefs.

Additionally, President Tinubu appointed Adeniyi Adewale as the Acting Comptroller General of Customs. All the newly appointed officials had already assumed their duties in an acting capacity prior to their confirmation by the National Assembly.
