Following the intervention of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) on the rejection of 17 commissioner nominees by the Lagos House of Assembly, the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday submitted a fresh list to the legislative arm.

GAC, the advisory council of the ruling All Progressive Council (APC) in Lagos, had waded into the trouble between the legislators and the governor over the rejection of 17 of his commissioner nominees.

The assembly members had approved 22 out of the 39 names sent to them for confirmation by Sanwo-olu and rejected 17 of them after the assembly members complained about the domination of the list by Christians and fewer the number of Muslims on the list.

The assemblymen had also condemned the fact that the list was not representative of the diversity of the state in terms of local government areas and core politicians who worked for the success of the party in the state.

Sanwo-Olu represented the names of the immediate past Commissioner for Health in the state, Akin Abayomi; Information, Gbenga Omotosho; and Economic Planning, Samuel Egube, who were among the 17 nominees earlier rejected by the House, on the new list.

Other names on the new list include; Oluwarotimi Waheed Fashola, Bolaji Dada, Yekini Agbaje, Abayomi Oluyemi, Afolabi Abiodun Tajudeen, Oriyomi Osiyemi, Olalere Odusote, Akinyemi Ajigbotafe, Barakat Akanji, Tolani Sule Alimi, Ogunsope George, and Olamide Oluyinka

The ad hoc committee led by the Chief Whip, Fatai Mojeed, who screened the previous nominees, will also screen the new set of nominees, according to a statement posted to the House’s verified X handle on Monday.

“Governor’s Nominees for Commissioners: Speaker Obasa calls on the committee that handled the previous nominees to take charge on the new list sent by the Governor, @jidesanwoolu, and report back to the House by Thursday, September 9, 2023.

“Some of the nominees have their documents with you, and you can reach out to the new nominees. I want you to be thorough and do the needful while carrying out this exercise,” the statement partly read.

Sources said the new list was a compromise between the governor and the leadership of the state assembly after the GAC intervention, which involved the dropping of some of the previous names and the inclusion of new nominees to accommodate the demands of the legislators.

It should be recalled that the majority of members of the House of Assembly, including the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Majority Leader, and Chief Whip, are Muslims.
