The sacked Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho will walk away with about £20 million as a compensation package from the club, Dailymail reports on Monday.
Sources have claimed that his package will not go over £20 million due to performance-related clauses in his contract linked to European qualification and his £10 million-per-season salary.
Mourinho will be placed on gardening leave by Tottenham despite his dismissal, meaning Spurs will continue to pay him as normal until he finds new employment.
As a result of Spurs’ poor league position, Mourinho is effectively not entitled to his full compensation. Spurs are seventh in the Premier League, five points off the final Champions League place, currently occupied by West Ham.
Initial indications that Mourinho was earning £15m per season are said to be exaggerated.
His basic wage is closer to £10 million, which significantly decreases his severance deal.
It has been claimed that coaches Ryan Mason and Chris Powell are set to take the reins for the rest of the season.
Mourinho, 58, was sacked by the club after a dismal Premier League campaign and failure in the Europa League.
“The Club can today announce that Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin and Giovanni Cerra have been relieved of their duties,” a statement by the club stated on Monday.
Chairman Daniel Levy said: “Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a Club.
“Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic. On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged.
“He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.
Mourinho replaced Mauricio Pochettino in November 2019 but has now been dismissed after a dismal Premier League campaign and failure in the Europa League.
The bombshell axing comes less than a week before Tottenham are set to take on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
