Prices of yam, rice, tomatoes, other staple food rise in May ~NBS
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday said prices of staple foods items ranging from rice, yam tuber, tomatoes, bread, etc gone up in the month of May compared with the costs in the previous month.
In its survey of selected food across the country, the statistics agency said prices of I Kg of yam gone up by 2.96 percent in May and 9.66 percent year-on-year
For instance, 1Kg yam sold for N236.90 in May compared with N230.09 the same measure was sold in April, according to the NBS latest data.
The average price of 1Kg of imported rice also increased by 28.18 percent year-on-year but decreased month-on-month by -1.83 percent.
It said prices of imported rice measure in 1Kg was sold at N463.21 in May 2020 compared with N471.84 it was sold in April 2020.
NBS said the average price of 1kg of tomato increased year-on-year by 11.51 percent and month-on-month by 0.44 percent to N278.23 in May 2020 from N277 in April 2020.
“The average price of piece of Agric eggs medium size (price of one) decreased year-on-year by -4.63 percent and month-on-month by -1.68 percent to N40.84 in May 2020 from N41.54 in April 2020,” NBS said.
The data said prices of unsliced 500g loaf of bread rose 5.96 percent year-on-year but fell by -0.5 percent month-on-month in May, while prices of 1 unit of frozen chicken fell 3.58 percent year-on-year and 1.4 percent in May. One unit of frozen chicken cost N701.662.
