In a strategic move to bolster Nigeria’s law enforcement leadership, President Bola Tinubu has appointed retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Hashimu Argungu as the new Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC).

Argungu succeeds former Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase, who had been appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2023.

The appointment, announced by President Tinubu’s media aide Ajuri Ngelale on Monday, is part of a broader reshuffle aimed at enhancing the operational efficiency and integrity of Nigeria’s police force.

Alongside Argungu, Chief Onyemuche Nnamani has been named Secretary of the Commission, and retired DIG Taiwo Lakanu has been appointed as a Member. These appointments are pending confirmation by the Senate.

Additionally, President Tinubu has appointed Mr. Mohammed Sheidu as the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), with immediate effect. This position is critical for overseeing the financial and operational aspects of the police force’s development initiatives.

Ngelale emphasized that further appointments to the Police Service Commission will be made in due course.

The President expects all appointees to demonstrate the highest levels of integrity, diligence, and patriotic commitment in their new roles, aiming to significantly improve the effectiveness and reputation of the Nigeria Police.
