President Bola Tinubu has taken a significant stride towards alleviating the impact of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians with the endorsement of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI).

This pioneering initiative, announced by presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale, is poised to reshape the nation’s transportation landscape, fostering economic growth, job creation, and environmental sustainability.

Designed to curtail energy costs while bolstering local manufacturing and job opportunities, the PCNGI sets an ambitious agenda by targeting the conversion of over 55,000 existing petrol-dependent vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and the introduction of more than 11,500 new CNG-enabled vehicles.

A Comprehensive Adoption Strategy, the initiative is set to instate a Nationwide Network of Workshops, Local Assembly, and Job Creation, with particular emphasis on mass transit systems and student hubs.

In alignment with the initiative’s aims to seamlessly integrate CNG utility within Nigeria’s energy value chain, the PCNGI will establish workshops across all regions and states. These workshops will be equipped with essential kits and comprehensive training for newly employed personnel, fostering technical skill development and job opportunities for Nigerians.

The Nationwide Network of Workshops is expected to facilitate widespread access to CNG technology, thereby encouraging demand and utilization, and contributing to a smoother transition for vehicle owners.

The initiative aligns with several strategic objectives, including the development of stakeholder-operated Intrastate Mass Transit systems, support for states in incorporating CNG buses within their networks, deployment of CNG buses through private mass transit operators, and incentivizing investment in CNG processing, distribution, and utilization.

President Tinubu’s push for domestic CNG-enabled vehicle manufacturing, according to Ngelale is set to invigorate the nation’s economy, generate employment opportunities, and enhance the country’s automotive manufacturing capabilities.

The statement said that this initiative also underscores the administration’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy security through the utilization of local natural gas resources.

The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative heralds a transformative step towards a cleaner, more sustainable transport ecosystem, ultimately contributing to Nigeria’s sustainable development goals.
