President Bola Tinubu met with the Director of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Christopher Asher Wray at the State House in Abuja on Friday.

During their discussions, President Tinubu noted the critical importance of international collaboration in combating crime.

“The visit of Christopher Wray to Nigeria highlights the importance of our partnership with America’s law enforcement institutions,” President Tinubu stated, according to a statement from his media aide, Ajuri Ngelale.

“Achieving success in our fight against crime requires collaboration with other countries,” the president was quoted as saying.

Tinubu praised the FBI’s reputation for excellence and procedural sophistication, acknowledging the significance of the visit as recognition of Nigeria’s critical role in global crime-fighting efforts.

He highlighted the collaborative efforts within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to combat economic and related crimes, reinforcing the regional approach to these challenges.

“We are working hard to eliminate terrorism, cybercrime, and sextortion,” Tinubu added. “We have several agencies dedicated to reducing these crimes, and they are well represented at this meeting.”

President Tinubu also called on the U.S. government to assist developing countries in their fight against international crimes, stressing the role of education in addressing poverty as a root cause of criminal activity.

Wray commended President Tinubu’s commitment to counter-terrorism efforts in the region.

“We appreciate the president’s vision in countering terrorism, which poses a significant threat not only to the region but also to the United States,” Wray said.

“Your efforts in re-engineering the office of the NSA to effectively coordinate counter-terrorism initiatives are bearing fruit, particularly in the fight against ISIS in West Africa and other terrorist groups.”

The meeting underscores the growing partnership between Nigerian agencies and the FBI, aimed at enhancing collaborative efforts to combat crimes both locally and globally.
