In a surprising turn of events, Ukraine, a nation embroiled in a brutal war with Russia, has extended a generous donation of wheat to Nigeria to assist in alleviating nationwide hunger.

However, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last general election, Peter Obi, has expressed a mix of gratitude and disappointment, describing the situation as a “national disgrace” in a series of posts on his social media platform.

Commending Ukraine for their humanitarian gesture, Obi highlighted the irony of a nation with vast arable land and abundant natural resources relying on a war-torn country for food assistance.

He emphasised the importance of sound political leadership and the need for urgent reflection and reordering of national priorities, resource management, and allocation.

Obi acknowledged Ukraine’s rare generosity of spirit, emphasising the global solidarity it should attract.

He pointed out the stark contrast in the economic performance of the two nations, noting that, despite being at war, Ukraine’s GDP per capita exceeded $4000 by 2022, while Nigeria’s regressed to $2184.

Ukraine, with over 60% of its arable land cultivated, feeds itself, exports agricultural products worth over $25 billion, and serves as a global food supplier.

To address this national embarrassment, Obi called for an aggressive reordering of priorities, urging investment in productive sectors like agriculture.

He stressed the importance of addressing insecurity to enable farmers to return to their fields, supporting a productive manufacturing sector, and aiding small businesses.

Obi believes that concerted efforts in these areas over the next four to five years can reverse the current trend, leading Nigeria towards a more productive and self-sufficient future. This reflection underscores the critical role of effective leadership and strategic economic focus in shaping a nation’s destiny.
