PDP warns pro-Wike-Lawmakers in Rivers State against disruptive actions

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a stern warning to former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who recently lost their seats after defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The PDP cautions these individuals to refrain from actions and statements that could jeopardize peace and governance in the state.

In a statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP advises the ex-lawmakers to accept that they no longer hold positions in the Rivers State House of Assembly due to the self-executory provision of Section 109 (1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

Consequently, they lack the authority to convene or issue any directives to the State Governor in their former capacity as assembly members.

This admonition follows a controversial seven-day ultimatum issued by the former lawmakers, from an undisclosed location, demanding that Governor Siminialayi Fubara re-present the 2024 Rivers State budget, which has already been passed and signed into law.

The PDP contends that this move is an attempt to usurp the powers of the Rivers House of Assembly, intending to incite a crisis and disrupt the democratic and constitutional order in the state, in clear violation of Section 1 subsection 2 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The PDP emphasizes that upon their defection from the party on whose platform they were elected, the ex-lawmakers irrevocably forfeited their seats and could not enjoy the privileges and powers of assembly members.

The party calls on the Inspector General of Police to address the subversive activities of these individuals and ensure the protection of democratic institutions, peace, and security in Rivers State.

Furthermore, the PDP urges the people of Rivers State to remain vigilant and law-abiding, and to continue their collective efforts towards maintaining stability, peace, and the delivery of democratic dividends under the PDP’s leadership.
