Over 50 killed, many abducted in gruesome attack on Katsina village

At least 50 people were brutally killed and an unknown number, including women and children, were kidnapped when armed attackers descended upon the village of Yargoje in northwest Nigeria over the weekend. Residents recounted the horrific events on Monday.

This attack comes just a year after President Bola Tinubu vowed to tackle widespread insecurity.

Yet, violence by armed gangs, often called bandits, continues to plague the northwest region, with authorities seemingly unable to stop them.

Dozens of gunmen on motorbikes stormed Yargoje, located in Katsina state’s Kankara local government area, late on Sunday, according to resident Hassan Ya’u.

“They fired indiscriminately at everyone, taking the lives of more than 50 people, including my own younger brother,” Ya’u told Reuters in a phone interview. He added that an unknown number of villagers were abducted, and properties were looted.

Another resident, Abdullahi Yunusa Kankara, narrowly escaped the onslaught, which reportedly continued through the early hours of Monday. “Our village has become a death zone,” Kankara lamented. “Nearly every home has been affected by this attack.”

Kankara further stated, “We’re currently trying to determine how many people were kidnapped. More bodies were discovered this morning.”

Katsina police authorities have not yet responded to requests for comment.

This attack highlights the ongoing struggle with violence in northern Nigeria. The region faces not only these armed gangs in the northwest but also a long-running Islamist insurgency in the northeast and deadly clashes between farmers and herders in the north-central areas.
