Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma have inaugurated the Owerri Central Market Complex, emphasizing its significance as a national asset poised to drive economic growth.

The inauguration took place on Friday at Umuohiadagu Umualum in the Nekede area of Owerri.

Obasanjo expressed strong confidence in the project’s potential to attract investors, generate employment, and foster wealth and development. “The Owerri Central Market Complex has been planned to attract businessmen and women from across the country and beyond,” he stated.

“It will create jobs, wealth, harmony, unity, and development for Imo State and Nigeria at large.”

He lauded Governor Uzodimma for his developmental initiatives in Imo State and assured stakeholders that investments in the project would yield substantial returns. “The money invested will be recouped through profit from the investment,” Obasanjo said.

Reflecting on the historical significance of Owerri, Obasanjo recalled its strategic importance during the Nigeria-Biafra war, underscoring its role in unifying the nation.

Governor Uzodimma expressed gratitude for Obasanjo’s support and pledged to create a conducive environment for the project’s success. “We will encourage you to climb. Don’t be afraid, we will support you,” he told the project’s promoter, Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu.

“This market will be a source of blessing to Imo State and Nigeria at large when completed,” Uzodimma added.

The Governor acknowledged the challenges that delayed the project’s construction, including the illegal subdivision of the land.

He noted that the government’s intervention, through a commission of inquiry, led to the recovery of the land. Uzodimma assured that the government would uphold its responsibilities to maintain investor confidence in the project.

The Owerri Central Market Complex is expected to become a significant economic hub, driving prosperity and development in the region and beyond.
