In line with its mission to provide cost-effective fuel alternatives, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has announced a strategic collaboration with NIPCO Gas Limited to establish a network of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations across the country.

This transformative partnership seeks to enhance CNG accessibility, broaden infrastructure, and expedite the adoption of a cleaner and more affordable fuel option for buses, cars, and Keke NAPEP, with the overarching goal of reducing transportation expenses and fostering sustainable economic growth.

The NNPC-NIPCO alliance will encompass the construction of 35 cutting-edge CNG stations nationwide, including the establishment of three Mother stations. Once operational, these stations are projected to cater to the needs of over 200,000 vehicles daily, thus significantly curbing fuel costs for Nigerian motorists and contributing to more economical transportation solutions.

The implementation of this ambitious endeavor will unfold in phases: the initial phase will encompass 21 CNG stations focused on intra-city transportation, expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2024. Subsequently, the second phase, involving 35 CNG stations for inter-city travel, is scheduled for completion by late 2024. Furthermore, NNPC Retail will contribute an additional 56 stations across the nation.

NIPCO Gas Limited, which presently operates 14 CNG stations in Nigeria and has successfully converted over 7,000 vehicles to CNG operation, will play a pivotal role in ensuring the success of this initiative.

Leveraging NIPCO’s technical proficiency and field expertise will amplify the positive outcomes of this collaboration and augment its contribution to the country’s economic landscape.

This innovative venture will harness Nigeria’s abundant natural gas reserves to bestow a multitude of benefits upon its citizens, encompassing more affordable fuel options, diminished transportation expenditures, reduced carbon emissions, novel avenues for business growth, and an influx of employment opportunities.

NNPC Limited anticipates broader involvement from private sector players, such as oil marketing companies, to further enhance CNG accessibility and availability. NNPC Limited remains steadfast in its commitment to providing reliable energy and continually generating value for Nigeria’s prosperous future, alongside its dedicated partners.
