Nigeria’s electricity generation experienced a significant week-on-week drop of 16.4 percent, falling to 3,501.20 megawatts (MW) from the previous week’s 4,187.6 MW, according to recent reports.

Multiple factors contributed to this decline, including the poor condition of power plants and insufficient gas supply to thermal plants. As a consequence of the situation, the Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) have resorted to load shedding, a measure taken to distribute the limited electricity among consumers at different times.

In parallel developments, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reported that eleven electricity distribution companies have submitted applications for a rate review.

These requests are based on the need to incorporate changes in macroeconomic parameters and other factors that affect the quality of service, operations, and sustainability of these companies.

Meanwhile, Powercom Smart Grid Nigeria (PSGN) made a significant announcement about its acquisition of Kano Electricity Distribution Plc (KEDCO). PSGN, a subsidiary of Powercom, specializes in providing an end-to-end Smart Grid/Smart Metering turnkey solution.

According to a statement released by PSGN, the acquisition presents an opportunity for KEDCO to implement a comprehensive turnaround plan aimed at enhancing performance and efficiency.

The PSGN Turnaround Plan encompasses a strategic approach to address the challenges faced by KEDCO, transforming it into a highly efficient and financially viable electricity distribution company serving approximately 5 million customers.

The plan focuses on various aspects, including revenue enhancement, operational performance optimization, revenue collection, customer service, and overall system reliability.

PSGN’s comprehensive solution includes upgrading the existing distribution grid into a modern platform with services such as revenue enhancement, energy loss reduction, debt recovery, outage reduction, grid optimization, asset recording, asset protection, peak load management, workforce automation, and improved customer service.

PSGN will provide smart electricity endpoints to KEDCO, along with a full backbone infrastructure to manage the grid, including a Vending Platform and a Control Room with GIS visualization for grid management.

The acquisition of KEDCO by PSGN is expected to bring positive changes and improve the electricity distribution services in the region, aiming to meet the needs of millions of customers and ensure the efficient and reliable distribution of electricity.
