Nigeria’s economy is showing signs of improvement and is set to rebound in the coming months, Vice President Kashim Shettima said on Saturday.

Speaking at the launch of Nasarawa State’s Human Capital Development Strategy and Gender Transformative Human Capital Policy in Lafia, Shettima emphasized that the government is committed to reversing the country’s high unemployment rate and expanding the labour force.

Shettima highlighted the importance of the Human Capital Development (HCD) Programme under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, aimed at addressing Nigeria’s challenges with low labour participation and a growing informal sector.

He stressed that the program is designed to equip Nigerian workers with globally competitive skills that will enable them to excel both locally and internationally.

“This strategy will empower our workforce and ensure Nigeria thrives in the 21st-century economy,” Shettima noted.

He praised Nasarawa State for its commitment to HCD, which he described as crucial for breaking cycles of poverty, unplanned fertility rates, and high maternal and child mortality.

The Vice President acknowledged the ECOWAS region’s low ranking on the global Human Capital Development Index but viewed it as a call to action, not disillusionment.

“Every child must have access to quality education and healthcare, and our workforce must be equipped with the skills to compete globally,” Shettima said.

Special Adviser to the President on the National Economic Council (NEC) and Climate Change, Rukaiya El-Rufai reaffirmed that the HCD program, launched in 2018, is critical to reducing poverty and fostering socio-economic growth.

Ahmed Wadada also stressed that education remains the cornerstone of human capital development, noting Nasarawa’s leadership in laying the groundwork for national progress.
