Nigeria’s chief justice Muhammad resigns on ill-health grounds, Buhari expects to announce Ag. CJN soon

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Tanko Muhammad has resigned his appointment as the head of the nation’s judiciary, citing ill-health as his reason for quitting his position.

Reports claimed that the CJN resigned on Sunday night, in circumstance some analysts trying to link with his recent altercation with the 14 Justices of the Supreme Court over welfare and financial management.

When contacted, the Special Adviser on Media and Communication to CJN, Ahuraka Yusuf Isah, said, “All I know is that he’s going to declare open a workshop this morning at the NJI (National Judicial Institute).”

Following his resignation, Olukayode Ariwoola may be sworn in as the next acting Chief Justice of Nigeria subject to confirmation by the Senate.

It was learnt that there was a memo from the judges to the presidency, highlighting all of the CJN’s financial dealings, and stating that they would stop sitting from September if he is not removed.

However, the CJN in a statement issued by his spokesman, Isa Ahuraka, said he did not want to join issues with the justices, adding that the circulation of the letter is akin to “dancing naked at the market square”.

The supreme court is yet to release a formal statement on the resignation, but it was learnt that following the news of the CJN’s resignation, justices of the apex court are currently in a meeting.
