Nigeria to start work on Kaduna-kano $1.2 bln rail line this month ~Minister

The federal government will start construction work on the $1.2 billion railway project to link Kano and Kaduna this month, according to Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi.

Already the government has released $280 million to kickstart the project pending the time negotiation will be completed on the Chinese loan to be deployed for the project.

He said the railway projects will be funded from the federal government budget while Chinese financing is being awaited.

So far, the government has committed $280 million to the project and will soon provide a further $100 million, Amaechi said.

Last month, the President, Mohammadu Buhari commissioned the Lagos-Ibadan standard rai line projection financed through loans from Chinese Exim bank and said it would soon start work on the Port-Harcourt – Maiduguri rail line project.

The government has made the construction of railway a priority, deploying loans from China in a bid to take off its major roads huge haulage trucks, which have continued to impact negatively on the road infrastruture.
