The National Communications Commission (NCC) on Monday said it has no plan to order telecom service providers to shutdown their sites in Katsina State as was effected in the neighbouring Zamfara State.

In a statement, the NCC Vice Chairman, Umar D. Danbatta was quoted to refute a trending social media story on the issue.

Danbatta said the story was false, added that the purported letter trending in the social media was a cloned version of the one sent to Zamfara State, where there is a TOTAL shutdown of telecom sites.
He therefore advised that the trending news suggesting that similar action would be effected in Katstina State should be disregarded, as it did not emanate from the Commission.

Mobile telephone networks were shut down in the northwestern Zamfara State, residents said on Monday, amid reports that authorities had ordered a blackout while they tackled armed gangs of kidnappers terrorising the area.

Two residents of Zamfara, reached by phone after they travelled to neighbouring Sokoto State, said their mobile networks had stopped functioning over the weekend.

A document that appeared to be a letter from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to network provider Globacom instructing it to shut down services in Zamfara from Sept. 3 was circulating on social media.
