Nigeria is poised to host representatives from 54 African nations and various continental Internet governance stakeholder groups at the 2023 Africa Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF 2023), scheduled to convene in Abuja from September 18th to 21st, 2023.

Marking its 12th annual edition, this year’s AfIGF is proudly hosted by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on behalf of the Federal Government.

The event is slated to hold in Abuja, bearing the overarching theme, “Transforming Africa’s Digital Landscape: Empowering Inclusion, Security, and Innovation.”

This four-day gathering stands as an indispensable platform for fostering constructive dialogue and collaboration on Internet governance, encompassing diverse sectors and regional initiatives aimed at bolstering digital connectivity, tackling Internet governance challenges, and propelling Africa forward through digital transformation.

Preceding the main forum, the African Youth Internet Governance Forum will take place from September 13th to 18th, 2023.

The program for this year’s event commences with the Parliamentarian Symposium, running from September 18th to 19th, 2023. During this session, parliamentary members from all participating nations will convene for roundtable discussions, enhancing their understanding of the legislature’s role in Internet governance in Africa and fostering closer synergy among parliaments.

The Forum’s dynamic structure includes an array of gatherings, comprising dialogues, workshops, panel sessions, symposia, and roundtable discussions. It serves as an inclusive platform uniting stakeholders from across the African continent and international partners who will engage in discussions shaping the trajectory of Internet governance.

Highlighted sessions at the event will encompass plenary discussions, interactive workshops, and expert panels, delving into digital inclusion and connectivity; cyber security and data protection; digital rights and freedom of expression; artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies; e-commerce and the digital economy; and data governance and trust, among other pertinent topics.

Furthermore, participants will engage in discussions related to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals within the context of digital literacy and internet access, seeking to accelerate development on the continent.
