Napoli striker Osimhen may miss Nation’s cup, test positive for Covid-19

Hope that the Napoli player Victor Osimhen, will play along with for Nigeria in the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon in ten days time may be fading as the striker has tested positive for coronavirus.

“Napoli has announced that Victor Osimhen has tested positive for Covid-19 but is asymptomatic. Dr. Tartaro was due to perform a check-up on the player tomorrow.

“Consequently, the local authorities have ordered that Osimhen self-isolate and the check-up will be rescheduled after he has tested negative and his period of isolation ends,” his club announced on Thursday.

Osimhen was included in the country’s squad for next month´s Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon after making a quicker than expected recovery from injury.

He features in a 28-man squad named by coach Austin Eguavoen, who has taken over from Gernot Rohr after the German was sacked last month just weeks from the tournament.

Osimhen looked certain to miss the tournament, which is scheduled to kick off in Cameroon on January 9, after initially being ruled out for three months following surgery on face fractures suffered against Inter Milan in late November.

Nigeria have been drawn in Group D along with Egypt, Guinea-Bissau and Sudan. They play their first game against Egypt in Garoua on Jan. 11
