The continent’s biggest carrier, Ethiopian Airlines has emerged as the core investor in the proposed Nigerian National Carrier, Nigeria Air, following a bid, according to the country’s Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika.

Sirika, who disclosed this at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, said Ethiopian Airlines won the bid with a consortium and would have 95 controlling shares in the proposed airline.

While noting that only Ethiopian Airlines met the bidding evaluation criteria and the deadline, Sirika said it would hold 45 per cent equity with other consortiums holding 46 per cent.

According to the minister, the Federal Government will have only 5 per cent equity in the National Carrier.

He added that he would not disclose the identities of others who tried to submit their bid after the deadline but failed.

Last week, the Global Financial Digest reported the agreement by the federal government to have Ethiopian Airlines as the technical partner and core investors of the proposed national carrier, quoting reporting in ThisDay and The Cable.

The report showed that the ministry of aviation had started a training programme for the personnel of the proposed carrier at the Ethiopian Airlines facility in Addis Ababa.

“I heard the minister sent some pilots there some time ago for training. But it was ab-initio training. They are also preparing for the training of pilots on Boeing 737 NG aircraft. Ethiopian will provide the technical management,” the source added.
