Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State inaugurated new caretaker chairmen for the state’s 23 local government areas on Wednesday.

The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Executive Council Chambers of the Government House in Port Harcourt, took place under tight security, underlining the escalating political tension in the state.

Earlier in the day, the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by factional Speaker Victor Jumbo, screened and confirmed the governor’s nominees. This swift action followed Governor Fubara’s submission of the list on Tuesday.

According to the Clerk of the House, G.M. Gillis-West, the nominees were summoned for screening at 8 am on Wednesday.

The appointments come at a time of renewed political crisis in Rivers State. Former council chairmen have refused to vacate their offices despite the expiration of their tenures, leading to confrontations and unrest.

The police announced they had taken over the 23 council secretariats to prevent further violence.

The swearing-in ceremony saw the first batch of eleven caretaker chairmen taking their oath of office, followed by subsequent batches. Below are the names of the newly appointed caretaker chairmen:

The political crisis reached a boiling point on Tuesday when youths loyal to Governor Fubara forcibly removed chairmen who refused to leave office. The clashes resulted in the death of a policeman at the Eberi-Omuma secretariat in Omuma Local Government Area.

The violence underscored the deep divisions between supporters of Governor Fubara and those of his predecessor, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

In response to the unrest, the police intervened to maintain order, taking control of the local government secretariats across the state.

The move aims to prevent further violence and ensure a smooth transition of power to the newly appointed caretaker chairmen.

As the political landscape in Rivers State continues to evolve, the new caretaker chairmen face the challenge of stabilizing their respective areas while navigating the complexities of local governance amidst ongoing tensions.
