The immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has formally tendered his resignation as a member of the House to enable him to resume duty as the Chief of Staff to the president.

He was appointed as the Chief of Staff by President Bola Tinubu last week but could not assume duty due to his call as the speaker of the house,

He was reelected to represent Surulere 1 Federal Constituency in Lagos State before his new appointment and was sworn in as a member of the House at the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly on Tuesday.

In a letter addressed to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and read at Wednesday’s plenary, Gbajabiamila said that he was resigning to officially resume duty in his new office.

Gbajabiamila, who attended the plenary and moved a motion under personal explanation to submit his letter of resignation, remarked that serving in the House has been a great honour.

Gbajabiamila had earlier moved a motion of urgent public importance on the need for the federal and state governments to evolve measures to tackle the impending flooding as predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

Meanwhile, the Speaker, Abbas, in a swift move after reading the letter, declared the seat of Surulere 1 federal constituency of Lagos State hitherto occupied by Gbajabiamila for upward 20 years vacant upon the exit of the former speaker.

“On the account of the letter, we have declared the seat of Surulere 1 vacant as from today,” Abbas said.
