From Bayero University Kano to lifelong friendships: A journey of brotherhood

In 1979, as young men, full of excitement and anticipation, we embarked on a life-changing journey when we gained admission to the prestigious Bayero University in Kano.

That first year, spent at the School of General Studies (SGS), was a preparatory phase, a one-year prelim designed to expose us to a variety of subjects and help us chart our paths towards different careers.

At that stage, we were strangers, coming from various states and backgrounds, each with unique aspirations.

But over the course of that year, bonds were formed. Together, we navigated the challenges and joys of university life, made important decisions about our educational futures, and became fast friends.

Those four unforgettable years passed quickly, and we eventually parted ways, scattering across the country to fulfil our National Service duties (NYSC) in 1983.

Yet, despite the distances, we remained connected, keeping in touch even as we built careers and lives in different organisations and industries across the country.

Sadly, along the way, we lost some of our friends and mates (may their souls rest in peace). But the bond we created all those years ago remains unbroken.

Decades after, precisely, September 21st 2024, we gathered once again at the Bayero University old campus mosque, not as fresh-faced students but as seasoned men, excited for a different reason: the wedding of the daughter of our dear friend and brother, Bashir Nura Alkali, retired Federal Permanent Secretary.

Bashir is one of the most amazing human beings I’ve ever met, and this occasion brought us full circle, reminding us of the journey we’ve shared.

We have come a long way, and we thank Almighty Allah SWT for His endless mercies on us all. Here’s to friendship, to brotherhood, and to the grace of time that has kept us together.
