Nigeria's 36 states and Abuja earned N1.31 trln IGR in 2020, down 1.5% from 2019 figure ~NBS

Nigeria 36 states and the federal capital territory, Abuja Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) fell 1.50 percent to N1.31 trillion in 2020, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in its latest report.

The sub-nationals generated N1.33 trillion in IGR in 2019, an indication that the coronavirus pandemic impacted the finance of the states last year.

The NBS figure showed that Lagos State has the highest IGR of N418.99 billion in 2020, followed by Rivers State with N117.19 billion revenue.

The report stated that Yobe State recorded the least Internally Generated revenue for the period.

Lagos State also received a total of N115.93 billion from the federation account in 2020, pushing the state total revenue last year to N534.92 billion.

The nation's commercial nerve center generated a total of N114 billion in IGR in the first quarter of last year, and dropped to N90.51 billion in the second quarter, which fell within the period of lockdown imposed to containthe spread of covid-19.

Lagos IGR picked up by the third quarter to N10784 billion and again fell to N106.63 billion in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Rivers State which came second on the IGR table received a total of N141.1 billion from the federation account last year, pushing up total revenue for 2020 to N258.37 billion.

Also, breakdown of Rivers' IGR showed that the state generated a total of N36.65 billion in the first quarter of 2020, fell to N27.94 billion in the second quarter, N27.42 billion in the third quarter and N25.18 billion in the fourth quarter of last year.
