A section of the Kano State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was destroyed by an early morning fire outbreak on Tuesday.
According to a report by The PUNCH, the fire which started about 10.30 am, on Tuesday, affecting the Data Processing Centre of the INEC office and a section of the administrative department of the commission.
The Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, who confirmed the incident said no life was lost in the incident.
“Even though no life was lost but the inferno destroyed the ICT office and a block in the administrative office of the commission,” he said.
He said it was the quick intervention of the State Fire Service and Federal Fire Service as well as the Airport Fire Service that saved the fire from spreading to other parts of the building.
However, a source at the commission said when the fire started, the commission sought assistance from the Airport and Federal fire service at the Federal Secretariat.
“Although the members of staff of the commission were directed to stay by, however, Electoral Officers from local governments across the state undergoing training at the commission were asked to go home,” the source said.
Some staff members, who witnessed the incident, noted that the fire started following the fluctuations of electricity power voltage which abruptly resulted in the blasting of some air conditioners at the centre.
“In the data centre are laptops, batteries and other related gadgets for data processing activities,” one of them said.
