Electricity consumers to pay more from Sept.1, as NERC approves new tariff for DisCo

Electricity consumers in the country will from September 1, this year pay higher tarrif for the electricity consumption as the industry regulator, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has approved increase in tariff for the 11 Power distribution companies (DisCo).

According to a document, the NERC has given the energy distributors the leverage to charge a service-based tariff in its letter titled “Tariff Increase Notification.”

An official document with a titled:”023/EKEDP/GMCLR/0025/2021, dated 25th August 2021, by one of the DisCo, Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), officially informed its customers on the decision to adjust its tariff uward effective from September 1, 2021.

EKEDC informed its customers that “the increase will be reflected on the energy bill for October 2021, which will represent energy consumption for September 2021.”

Informing its metered customers on the development, the company said “for metered customers with internal vending arrangements, we urge you to adjust the rates accordingly to reflect the new tariff increase as released by NERC.”

Both labour union leaders and the federal government had set up committee to review decision of tarriff hike and the committee is yet to come out with its recommendation for ratification by the parties concerned.

Issue of tarrif hike and withdrawal of fuel subsidy are twin challenges the labour unions are trying to resolve with the federal government.
