The Department of State Services (DSS) has launched an investigation into the unfortunate incident that occurred at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on 25th July, 2023, during the arraignment of Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

In response to the incident involving its staff and personnel from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS),

Signed by the agency’s Public Relations Officer Peter Afunanya, the DSS disavowing any endorsement of such actions. The agency stressed that the incident did not represent the professional conduct of the DSS and expressed regret for the situation that unfolded.

The DSS reiterated its profound respect for the Judiciary as an integral arm and institution of the Nigerian government. It affirmed that it would never undermine the Judiciary, recognizing its critical role in nation-building, national development, and security management.

The agency also emphasized its commitment to maintaining a strong working relationship with sister security and law enforcement agencies, including the NCoS.

Both the DSS and NCoS personnel involved in the incident were deemed to have acted with undue overzealousness, prompting the DSS to initiate detailed investigations. The primary objective is to identify the specific individuals responsible and, if necessary, take appropriate disciplinary actions. Additionally, the DSS aims to draw lessons from the incident to prevent a recurrence in the future.

The DSS clarified that, despite attempts by some parties to distort the narrative, the agency had not violated any laws in handling the Emefiele case. The agency previously raised concerns about attempts to discredit its leadership and reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, ethical standards, and discipline while carrying out its duties.

In fulfilling its national security mandate, the DSS asserted its dedication to avoid being utilized for clout-seeking or delusional heroism. Instead, the agency remains focused on achieving the nation’s security goals. The DSS urged well-meaning Nigerians to support its efforts in safeguarding the country’s security, highlighting the importance of unity, love, and tolerance in building a stronger Nigeria.

As investigations continue, the DSS seeks to ensure transparency and accountability, demonstrating its commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining public trust in its operations.
