Court of Appeal upholds removal of 27 Rivers State lawmakers

In a landmark decision, the Court of Appeal in Abuja has affirmed the removal of Martins Chike Amaewhule and 26 other members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The ruling, delivered virtually on Friday, upholds a previous decision by a Federal High Court that declared their seats vacant.

The three-member appellate panel stated that reversing the lower court’s decision at this stage would effectively pre-judge the appeal that is currently before them.

Consequently, they set June 20 for the hearing of the appeal by Amaewhule and the other legislators, who are seeking to regain their seats in the State House of Assembly.

In their ruling, the justices emphasized the importance of maintaining the status quo and called on all parties to cease hostilities until the matter is fully heard and decided.

This decision highlights the ongoing legal battles and political tensions within the Rivers State legislative body.

As the situation develops, all eyes will be on the June 20 hearing, which will determine whether the ousted lawmakers will be able to reclaim their positions.

This case underscores the complexities and high stakes involved in political and legal disputes within Nigeria’s legislative framework.
