The Federal Government has pledged to secure Nigeria’s active role in shaping the development and regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) on the global stage.

This commitment underscores the imperative for Nigeria to assert its presence in the evolving landscape of AI technologies, anticipating a forthcoming convergence in global AI practices.

The country’s Minister of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy (CIDE), Bosun Tijani, articulated this stance during the inaugural session of a workshop on national artificial intelligence strategy in Abuja.

The workshop, titled “Developing the High Level Strategy and Implementation Plan for a National AI Strategy for Nigeria,” spans four days and aims to chart Nigeria’s course in the AI domain.

Tijani emphasised the ubiquity of digital technology in regions such as Asia, America, and Europe, stressing that Nigeria and Africa must not lag behind in embracing this transformative trend.

He highlighted the need for Nigeria to align with global powers like the US, UK, and Asia in shaping the trajectory of AI development and regulation.

“The US, UK, and Asia exert significant influence on AI development and regulation. As AI systems converge globally, Nigeria must assert its position as a key player in this domain,” remarked Tijani.

He underscored the transformative potential of AI across various sectors and emphasised the importance of crafting a strategic roadmap to enhance Nigeria’s capabilities in AI knowledge, skills, and deployment.

Tijani further emphasised that the impact of AI extends beyond national boundaries, calling for a holistic approach that considers its implications for humanity as a whole.

He stressed that any technology with the potential to influence human cognition and behavior should be approached not merely as a national asset but as a global endeavor.

As Nigeria embarks on this journey to harness the transformative power of AI, the government’s commitment to ensuring the nation’s voice in global AI discourse signals a proactive stance towards embracing emerging technologies and driving innovation on a global scale.
