Nigerians should not trust politicians who contributed to the nation’s current challenges and had continued to position themselves for elections or re-elections in 2023, according to ex-Minister of External Affairs, Bolaji Akinyemi.

Akinyemi, who spoke at the 9th annual lecture of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria on Friday stated that politicians were taking Nigerians for granted and believed that the people had forgotten the roles they (politicians) played in grounding the country’s economy.

“I am not happy that those who brought us to the edge of the precipice as a nation, instead of glueing to their seat quietly at home to hide their heads for the tragedies they brought on the nation, are even the ones positioning themselves as the saviour to the country. This is very sad,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, a professor of International Law and Jurisprudence, Akin Oyebode urged the electorate to take advantage of the new election season to vote for candidates that will make a difference in the country’s existential circumstances.

Oyebode said this would make the nation come to terms with its current challenges.

“Chinua Achebe informed us a few years ago that the primary problem in Nigeria is that of leadership. If only we can get the leadership issue right, everything else would fall in place.”

The General Overseer of Foursquare, Sam Aboyeji had earlier tasked Christians to participate actively in the forthcoming general elections, stressing that saying, “we have a duty and an obligation as stakeholders and partners with government in the building of our dear nation.”

“As a church, one of the tenets of faith which we hold strongly is civil government. We believe and preach that as responsible citizens of this great nation Nigeria, we have a duty and an obligation as stakeholders and partners with government in the building of our dear nation.
