The acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum has emerged victorious in the face of attempts to remove him from office.

The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, held Thursday, was shadowed by intense discussions surrounding Damagum’s tenure.

Previously serving as the PDP National Deputy Chairman (North), Damagum assumed the role of acting National Chairman following the court’s suspension of the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu.

The court’s decision stemmed from a request by a PDP member, Terhide Utaan, prompted by a vote of no confidence passed on Ayu by his ward executives.

Controversy ensued when 60 members of the House of Representatives called for Damagum’s removal and advocated the appointment of a substantive chairman from the North Central region.

However, the House minority caucus, led by Kingsley Chinda, distanced themselves from the group, disavowing its authority within the parliament.

Tensions escalated within the PDP Caucus meeting in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, revealing a division among lawmakers regarding Damagum’s leadership.

Despite efforts to garner support for Damagum in the pre-NEC meeting, challenges arose, thwarting the intended endorsement by lawmakers aligned with FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

While the PDP’s National Working Committee expressed full support for Damagum, the North Central Zone of the party unanimously decided to nominate the next national chairman, following Ayu’s removal.

However, the National Caucus meeting, held in the early hours of Thursday, concluded with Damagum retaining his role as acting national chairman until further deliberations at the subsequent NEC meeting.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba highlighted the caucus’s endorsement of Damagum’s continued acting role, emphasizing the importance of broader consultations.

He underscored the party’s commitment to unity and adherence to constitutional processes amidst ongoing complexities.

The National Caucus instructed the NWC to review the list of the Rivers State Caretaker Committee, aiming for a political solution to resolve all issues.

Amidst these deliberations, the party remains dedicated to fostering cohesion and inclusivity, steering through challenges while upholding constitutional principles.
