About 20 people killed as rice truck rammed into Ondo market

No fewer than 20 people were allegedly killed by a truck accident in a Market at Ibaka Area of Akungba Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State, according to the state Police command.

Though the police report on the accident which involved a truck conveying bags of rice to the market did no stated the number of casualties, but eyewitnesses said many people were killed in the accident.

Also, the report stated that market stalls and goods were destroyed by the truck, which suddenly developed break failure and lost control, ramming to the market and people buying and selling in the market.

“The accident occurred at about 7.30 pm, when the trailer loaded with bags of rice rammed into the stalls in the market.

“As I am talking to you about 20 people must have been killed because we have removed over 10 dead bodies under the trailer and many are still trapped under the trailer,” an eyewitness said.

Confirming the accident on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), of the state police command, Tee-Leo Ikoro said about eight persons had been confirmed dead.

“As we speak now eight people have been confirmed dead in the accident and we can still have more because we still have many people trapped under the trailer,” Ikoro said.
