The Federal Government and the Labour Union have reached an agreement on a new N70,000 minimum wage, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that sets the stage for implementation starting on July 29, 2024.

The agreement was confirmed in a statement released by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation on Friday, following a committee meeting in Abuja.

The MoU, signed by the Head of Civil Service, Didi Walson-Jack, outlines the resolution to adjust civil servant salaries in line with the new wage structure.

In addition to the minimum wage hike, the committee recommended that the government reinstate the wage award, which had been discontinued, and continue payments until July 28, 2024.

“The economic situation in the country was carefully considered before these decisions were made,” Walson-Jack stated, emphasizing the committee’s commitment to addressing the economic realities faced by workers.

She also praised the committee’s efficient and peaceful negotiations, noting this was one of the shortest wage discussions in recent memory.

The Head of Civil Service described the signing of the MoU as a major milestone in the wage adjustment process, adding that copies of the agreement would be forwarded to the Federal Government for final approval.

On the labour side, Benjamin Anthony, National Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council, commended the government for its efforts, expressing satisfaction with the outcome of the negotiations. He also acknowledged the importance of the wage adjustment in easing the economic strain on workers.
